THE PROBLEM GAMBLER

Compulsive gambling is a serious problem, although some people think that it could be easily stopped. What they do not know is that it is like other addiction, similar to alcoholism or smoke addiction, that it takes a lot to stop a compulsive gambler from gambling any further.
It is a good thing that at present, there are a lot of organizations which aim to aid people afflicted with compulsive gambling. Such organizations are the Gambler’s Anonymous and Colorado Council on Compulsive Gambling. In most of these organizations, the identity of the people who suffer from compulsive gambling are kept confidential.

Confidentiality is very important in treating compulsive gambling. This is because most sufferers have already engaged in some unlawful acts just to get out of their overwhelming gambling debts. Most compulsive gamblers are hesitant to seek help because they fear discrimination and possible imprisonment.

A lot of compulsive gambling sufferers experience being looked down upon by other people, and worse, even their own family and friends. They do not get the understanding which they should be getting. Some of them are also running away from loan sharks, so they could not risks to be discovered. This is why compulsive gambling organizations ensure the safety of all their members’ identity.

It is another good thing that now, even casinos are very helpful to push this call for healing compulsive gamblers. They help in tracking compulsive gamblers in their midst, and help regulate their play. They also give funds to compulsive gambling organizations. This is because they have come to realize that compulsive gambling doesn’t help in their business, however much it seems so. They know that compulsive gambling does not help to improve the image of gambling.

It is safe to say now that to heal compulsive gambling, the task should not only be given to the sufferer alone. It is a burden that should be shared by the sufferers, casinos, those closest to the sufferers, and the community at large.

The discrimination and insult that the compulsive gamblers get from the public do not in any way help them get rid of their problem. In fact, it only adds to the problem, and slows down the healing of compulsive gambling. Because of the discrimination, the sufferers of compulsive gambling get more insecure and shy away.

Certainly, it would be better if the others would help the compulsive gamblers by understanding them. If they have nothing good to say, then they better not speak at all.
